Skills days

‘So, when was the last time someone taught you to ride a bike?’

For bookings and availablity, see the bookings page.

Do you want to learn to ride smoother, faster, and with more confidence? What about learning to tackle more technical terrain or harder obstacles. Well, we can show you!

Our skills training is suitable for most riders, from the brand new rider just getting out on a mountain bike for the first time, through to the more confident, advanced rider who wants to hone their skills and look at improving their riding ability. The best results are achieved by completing each course.  So while it is not compulsory, it is recommended you learn the core skills before attending the intermediate course.

We have 3 day courses on offer:-

Core Skills

pb220153.jpgLets go ‘back to basics’! We will focus on some of the most important skills you can ever learn.  This begins with us briefly covering bike set-up and your body position and stance on your bike, so you are totally comfortable on your bike before we start getting too technical!

We cover techniques such as track stands, manuals and wheel lifts, and we will also go riding to attempt these skills ‘on the trail’. You may be surprised what bad habits you had picked up, or how much your riding improves by going back to basics!

Core Skills include:-

  • Bike checks and set-up
  • Correct balance, weight shift and movement on your bike
  • Braking, climbing and descending techniques
  • The four key MTB skills- Manual front wheel lifts, Power-assisted Front wheel lifts, Rear wheel lifts, and trackstand

    Intermediate skills 1 & 2

Now it’s time to take your ‘Core Skills‘ out onto the trails and have some fun.  These courses are aimed at those riders already competant in the core skills and are ready to take their riding to a new level. While it is not compulsory we do recommend you have already competed our core skills course to get the most out of these days.

We start off by building on the core skills and looking at how you can use those skills and techniques to tackle much harder and more difficult obstacles and terrain. You may be amazed how you can use what you already know to ride things you thought impossible! We will cover such skills as drop-offs, step-ups, technical climbs and descents, high speed cornering techniques and switch-back corners.

These days will involve much more riding on actual trails, and sessioning and practising out on the dirt.

  • Intermediate day 1- Learn Step overs, step ups, and drop offs. Pump and grind on the trails, and discover the key to utilising momentum in riding, high speed cornering and how to attack berms and flowing singletrack with confidence.
  • Intermediate day 2- Covers riding up and down switchbacks, technical climbing and descending techniques, attacking tricky trails, and bunny hops.

These courses are suited to almost all standards of rider, and we find beginner/intermediate riders, and advanced level riders can all learn from these courses at the same time. It is however recommended that you have at least tried some firetrack riding and are comfortable on your bike before commencing the course.

Group size will be limited to a max. of 6 students per instructor. Girls specific days are available, as are mixed days.

“It was an awesome day. I learnt a lot. A few new skills and adjusting some old ones. It was very relaxed and enjoyable. We were given the opportunity to learn and practice at our own pace while receiving one on one feedback and tips. The exercises were fun. The snacks were great too. I have recommended the course. Thanks Ian and Deb.” -Daniel

I had the BEST fun. I achieved things that I didn’t expect to do quite so easily. Now I have to do a David Beckam and ‘Pwactise, pwactise, pwactise” ;) It was great fun to be with a group of all women. I really appreciated the patience and good humour of Deb and Ian. The lunch was scrummy and heaps of it.” -Lyndy
